1. Western Green Hydrogen Initiative Announces Conclusion of its Activities
The Western Green Hydrogen Initiative (WGHI), a pioneering public-private partnership committed to advancing clean and green hydrogen infrastructure in the Western region for a better economy and environment, is announcing the conclusion and transition of its activities.
Established in November 2020 through a collaborative partnership between the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO), Western Interstate Energy Board (WIEB), and Green Hydrogen Coalition (GHC), the vision and mission of WGHI was to accelerate the deployment of clean and green hydrogen infrastructure in North America’s Western region for interested states and partners as well as enable hydrogen development investments and compensation at scale in the West.
WGHI coordinated efforts over the past 3.5 years across 11 western states and two Canadian provinces to foster peer learning and information exchange, collect and disseminate knowledge, model, and report on state and provincial planning and roadmaps for clean and green hydrogen as part of their energy and economic planning. From thoughtful workshops to providing essential information and tools, WGHI established a solid foundation for commercializing clean and green hydrogen for energy security, resilience, sustainability, and economic growth.
2. Renewable Hydrogen Hubs Officially Launch Along the West Coast
This month, the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES) and the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association (PNWH2) officially signed cooperative agreements with the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, including up to $1.2 billion from the DOE and $11.4 billion in private and public matching funds, to build and expand clean energy infrastructure in California, Oregon, Washington, and Montana.
Congratulations to the ARCHES and PNWH2 partners, stakeholders, and community members for their tremendous efforts to accelerate the West Coast's clean, renewable hydrogen economy!
With the first round of funding secured of $30 million from the DOE, California became the first state to officially launch a hydrogen hub (H2Hub)!
ARCHES will:
Eliminate up to 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually
Create approximately 220,000 new jobs
Generate almost $3 billion per year in economic value
Focus on providing at least 40% of project benefits to disadvantaged communities
Catalyze more than a dozen projects that will significantly improve air quality and public health in many underserved communities throughout California
In the coming weeks, ARCHES will announce additional projects and partners who will receive H2Hub funding.
PNWH2 will receive up to $27.5 million for the initial planning, permitting, and analyses to ensure the H2Hub's technological and financial viability.
PNWH2 will:
Eliminate approximately 1.7 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually
Create more than 10,000 high-quality local jobs
Focus on decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors, such as heavy-duty transportation, long-duration energy storage, ports, agriculture, and industrial operations.
Focus on meaningful community engagement by partnering with labor, Tribal Nations, and the public and private sectors to A) ensure pathways for new STEM-based education programs, B) advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the workplace, C) ensure benefits flow to tribal communities, and D) create economic opportunity for all.
Applications Open for $1.3 Billion in Funding to Expand National Electric Vehicle Charging Network and Alternative Fueling Infrastructure, Including Hydrogen
Eligible applicants include states, metropolitan planning organizations, local governments, port authorities, Indian Tribes, U.S. territories, and more. Applications are due by August 28, 2024.
