1. Introducing the Consumer Information Website
Whether you are a green hydrogen expert, new to green hydrogen, or anything in between: Join us to advance a clean and just energy transition.
To support continued education and policy and market development for green hydrogen (GH2), the GHC is proud to launch a consumer information website aimed at providing accessible, credibly sourced information about the benefits of GH2 and dispelling misconceptions.
Launched at Catalyst H2™ earlier this month, our website talks about GH2’s value streams with objective, down-to-earth content that seeks to build trust and alignment.
Several unique features of this website include:
A Cleaner Future for Ports: The GHC created a video episode featuring labor unions, community leaders, and port authorities to discuss how GH2 is safely displacing diesel use at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
Hydrogen Around the World: Explore how countries, states, and cities around the world are safely utilizing hydrogen today through an interactive, regularly updated map of global low-carbon hydrogen projects and their status.
Individual Contributions: Individuals can now donate to the GHC to enable faster progress toward a GH2 economy.
Audience Building:To reach out to more “hydrogen curious” audiences, the website is also available in Spanish.

Throughout 2023, the GHC has diligently pursued its mission to facilitate policies and practices that promote the widespread production and utilization of GH2. Our focus has centered on tackling barriers that currently prohibit the growth of a robust GH2 market. Through targeted educational initiatives, coalition-building endeavors, and market development campaigns, our core activities strive to overcome these obstacles and thereby advance GH2 at scale for an accelerated and equitable clean energy transition.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation for the invaluable donations that have fueled our work at the GHC. Your generous support of the GHC has propelled us toward meaningful change and steered us toward a decarbonized economy and sustainable infrastructure.
As we near the conclusion of 2023, your ongoing support remains essential and we invite you to consider a tax-deductible gift to the GHC by December 31. Individual donations can now be conveniently made online at gh2forclimate.org!
The GHC would like to relay our sincere appreciation and gratitude to everyone who supported and attended this year’s Catalyst H2™. Thanks to our community, we hosted a fantastic group of over 400 thought leaders and changemakers in Huntington Beach, including policymakers, regulators, investors, innovative technology providers, infrastructure developers and operators, mass-scale offtakers, and community stakeholders.
The positive energy and enthusiasm throughout the event were truly remarkable. From the insightful plenary presentations to the immersive workshops co-hosted with EPRI and the Renewable Thermal Collaborative to the educational site tours and exhibitor areas and engaging networking opportunities, the event provided a valuable platform for learning, collaboration, and community building.
Our intent for Catalyst H2™ is to create a learning lab where our community can convene, connect, learn, problem-solve, and in so doing, build new partnerships based on a foundation of mutual inquiry and trust. We hope you will agree that we accomplished these objectives and will join us as we continue to build the foundation for even greater success in 2024. Stay tuned for details on Catalyst H2™ 2024, planned for Q4 in Southern California!

4. CARB Proposes Big Changes to the Low Carbon Fuel Standard
On December 19th, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) released its proposed changes to the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS). CARB intends to adopt this standard in March by formally submitting regulatory language in January, which will begin on the 45-day comment period. Some proposed changes to expect include:
Increasing the required carbon reductions to 25% by 2025, 30% by 2030, and 90% by 2045;
Expanding infrastructure credits to include hydrogen and electricity for medium and heavy-duty vehicles;
Phasing out credit for biomethane used in natural gas vehicles for projects that break ground after Dec. 31, 2029 — that biomethane will only receive LCFS credit through Dec. 31, 2040;
Requiring hydrogen to be at least 40% renewable initially and 80% renewable by 2045;
Including hydrogen generated from steam methane reformation or electrolysis in the Tier 1 calculator;
Requiring hydrogen to provide quarterly matching and tracking;
Ending the exemption for jet fuel.
You can find more details about this proposal on CARB's Website.
5. GHC Policy and Regulatory Advocacy
The GHC has been busy advocating for the value of green hydrogen to support clean, reliable, and affordable energy systems through regulatory and legislative engagement. Check out the most recent Regulatory Filings for details on our progress:
The GHC team wishes you a happy and healthy holiday season and a prosperous 2024! We look forward to continuing our work together to advance the decarbonization of energy systems and speed a clean and just energy transition.
